Very few things in life are Free! How many times have we heard this old adage over and over.

Regardless of whom provides these financial services be it a Bank, Credit Union, Stockbroker, Business Consultants, Insurance Agents …… they all entail “fees or Costs”. These are often hidden or buried “WITHIN” the investment as service charges, ongoing fees, commissions, MERs paid by Stocks, Bonds, Mutual funds and ETFs to the Agent, Institution or Broker.
When you ask about these charges we are often told they are very small, 1 to 3% or so. In fact over time, these small percentages can have a huge effect on your investments. Over a lifetime these “small Costs or Fees” can quite literally add up 10’s or even 100’s of Thousand Dollars. This is, in fact your hard earned money, going into someone else’s pocket!
Whom do you think is paying for the Banks’ expenses or your broker or Agents car?
The answer, quite frankly, is YOU are!
As a simple example on a mutual fund purchase the higher the management expense ratio (MER), the bigger its effect on your return. If you’re paying an annual 2 percent management fee and see a 6 percent return on your investment statement, the actual return was 8 percent because 2 percent was deducted to cover the fee. Every dollar you pay in management fees is subtracted from your return—therein lies the difference between gross and net return. The smallest change in the fee percentage can have an impact on your long-term savings.
Enough to buy a New Car or go on several wonderful vacations on just what you paid on fees!
